A simple permit-free A-frame
Our smallest and simplest design, this permit-free cabin plan distills the iconic A-frame aesthetic down to its essential elements. The 10’ x 10’ footprint and 9’ x 12’ interior floor area lets you build it *permit-free in many jurisdictions. With its 4’ x 12’ covered deck, this little beauty really shines as a guest sleeping bunk, meditation, yoga, or art studio, just about anywhere you’d like to put it. Leave the framing exposed for the ultimate in rustic simplicity, or add insulation and finish the ceiling for complete 3-season luxury.
Simple to build, this is a great DIY project, as your one and only getaway space, or as a complement to a larger main cabin or house project. With a small team of 2-3 capable people this cabin can be built from start to finish in a week. It requires no heavy machinery or specialized tools, and the plans come with a list of the off-the-shelf materials required, for simple one-stop ordering from your local lumber yard.
*This cabin may be built without a construction permit depending on the project site and intended use. Always confirm your region’s regulations before deciding to build any project.
The following is for informational purposes only.
In the US or Canada, per square foot costs for materials range between US$75 and $250, with labour another US$75 to $250 per square foot.
To get up-to-date, locally relevant pricing for the materials that will be required to build your cabin, take your set of plans, no matter where you purchased them, to a building materials supplier to receive a ‘materials takeoff’ and price for everything that they are able to supply. If you are building your cabin yourself, *this* amount, plus another 15% for contingency, is your ballpark cost to build, plus your time.
Complete and even more accurate building budget calculations can be made by a local, experienced builder who has considered all your unique requirements and the building site’s unique characteristics. It can be worth paying a small consultation fee to gain their real-life insights into building costs in your particular area.
Cost varies by region and finishings. All of our designs offer flexibility during planning and during construction to use windows, doors, and interior & exterior finishes that suit your budget and preferences.
