Frequently Asked Questions
No, there is no licensing fee and no restrictions on the number built - build one for yourself, or build 10 for your getaway cabin rental business
No matter if you’re planning to build it all yourself or hire professional help, almost everyone wants to know how much their cabin will cost to build. For realistic planning, you need real numbers.
Cost varies region to region, and by the level of finishes and the quality of the windows and doors you choose.
All of our designs offer flexibility during planning, and during construction, to use windows, doors, and interior & exterior finishes that suit your budget and preferences.
In the US or Canada, per square foot costs for materials to build a small cabin design such as ours ranges widely, from US$50 per square foot, and up, with professional labour another US$75 per square foot, and up.
To get up-to-date, locally relevant pricing for the materials that will be required to build your cabin, take your set of plans to a building materials supplier to receive a ‘materials takeoff’ and their price for everything that they are able to supply. If you are building your cabin yourself, this amount, plus another 15% for contingency, is your ballpark cost to build, plus your time.
Complete and even more accurate building budget calculations can be made by a local, experienced builder who has considered all of your specific requirements and the building site’s unique characteristics. It can be worth paying a small consultation fee to gain their real-life insights into building costs in your particular area.
Yes, all of our designs are intended to be insulated, to meet or exceed code requirements. Many of our designs feature intentionally exposed structural elements and wood finishes that appear to be not insulated; in fact they are all designed for code-compliant levels of insulation.
Absolutely. The fee for customization is a flat-rate of US$625/CA$750 with an allowance of up to 10 hours of drafting time; after 10 hours the hourly rate of US$65/CA$75 applies. Most modifications are completed within the flat-rate time allowance.
If you would prefer to work with your own engineer or architect to make your changes, we offer the .dwg CAD files for US$400/CA$500. Please contact us for this purchase.
Regulations differ widely around the world; contact your local building and zoning departments to understand the regulations in your area regarding the type of cabin (e.g. seasonal or full-time, a ‘dry’/no plumbing cabin or one with running water, etc) you would like to build.
If you live in an area that has considerable snowfall, high winds, or earthquakes, having a local engineer review your plans will be a critical step. Engineering may also be required as a matter of course for building permits in your area. Contact your local permit office to find out what the requirements are in your area. We always encourage having all plans reviewed by an engineer local to you, as they will be up-to-date on any unique requirements for your locality.
