22’ × 26’ Building / 22’ x 32’ footprint / 750 sq ft of interior floor area / Bed Loft / Full Bathroom / Full kitchen / Covered deck
With 750 square feet of free-flowing floor area and cathedral ceiling it feels open, bright and airy, with clear sight lines through the building and into the outdoors, maintaining the sensation of a much larger space.
The undivided double height space allows the interior areas to connect and borrow space from one another. For example, the bed loft would feel cramped if it were fully enclosed; the open volume also makes the living area below feel much larger. The extended roof provides protection for the open deck and shades the interior from the hot mid-day sun, extending the living space, rain or shine.
For off-grid use, there is plenty of roof area for solar panels; a utility room above the bathroom neatly hides electrical and plumbing equipment. The fully insulated floor, walls and roof ensure maximum comfort and low heating costs. Any type of foundation may be used, including but not limited to full basement, crawl space and slab-on-grade.
With the high cost of building materials comes a greater need to scrutinize every aspect of a design, to ensure that it can be built efficiently with minimal waste of time and materials, and will have low operating and maintenance costs for the life of the building. The Tofino was designed for advanced framing techniques (Google ‘smart framing’), saving labour time and lumber costs, while making room for more insulation, resulting in more comfort and lower heating bills.
This design is very versatile and well suited to a range of uses: off-grid cabin, lakeside cottage, ADU, backyard studio, office, guest suite, or short-term rental.

In the US or Canada, per square foot costs for materials range between US$75 and $250, with labour another US$75 to $250 per square foot.
To get up-to-date, locally relevant pricing for the materials that will be required to build your cabin, take your set of plans, no matter where you purchased them, to a building materials supplier to receive a ‘materials takeoff’ and price for everything that they are able to supply. If you are building your cabin yourself, *this* amount, plus another 15% for contingency, is your ballpark cost to build, plus your time.
Complete and even more accurate building budget calculations can be made by a local, experienced builder who has considered all your unique requirements and the building site’s unique characteristics. It can be worth paying a small consultation fee to gain their real-life insights into building costs in your particular area.
Cost varies by region and finishings. All of our designs offer flexibility during planning and during construction to use windows, doors, and interior & exterior finishes that suit your budget and preferences.
